Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue massage is very similar to Swedish massage in the way that the massage is performed. The difference between a Deep tissue and Swedish is the pressure used. Swedish massage is a more topical massage, mainly performed with a lighter pressure. Deep tissue gets into the places that are not normally affected by a Swedish massage. It focuses on the deeper muscles, tendons and fascia (which is the connective tissue that holds muscle together.)

Deep tissue is really beneficial for people who suffer from high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, plantar fascititis, tennis elbow, and those with chronic low back pain. It is also beneficial for people with arthritis, because of the improving circulation to the joints and tendons.

What most therapists do not tell you, is that a deep tissue massage does not always hurt whilst getting a massage. However, a day to two days after receiving a deep tissue massage, there will be discomfort and achy areas because certain muscles have not been used or touched in such a long time.

Other side effects of deep tissue massage includes headache, sleepiness, muscle soreness or fatigue, redness or heated areas, inflammation and nausea. Most of the side effects are due to the fact that certain muscles addressed have not been addressed in a while. The nausea can occur because of the release of toxins in the body. The chances of these side effects actually occurring is about a four in ten chance. Drinking water before and after massage will greatly reduce the occurrence of any side effects at all.
